Apache Canyon and Glorieta Mesa, US Interstate 25, mile marker 296 This Civil War battle began 26 March 1862, when 400 Union soldiers, under Major John M. Chivington, fought 200-300 Texans, under Major Charles L. Pyron. The battle continued through the day, moving southwest towards the location shown here in this photo. Although the following day, both sides rested while awaiting reinforcements, the fighting began again on 28 March with 900 new Union soldiers under Colonel John P. Slough and 1,100 new Rebel soldiers under Lieutenant Colonel William R. Scurry. The battle ended with Scurry's troops retreating to Santa Fe. This became the major turning point of the Civil War in New Mexico. March 2000 |
