Four Corners is located in northwestern New Mexico.  This is the only place in the United States marking the common corner of four states - Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah.   The Four Corners Monument was established and perpetuated by U.S. Government Surveyors and Astronomers beginning in 1868.  Surveyors Darling, Robbins, Reeves, and Carpenter surveyed the boundary lines between the states. NM Hwy 597 is the only highway that leads directly to the Four Corners Monument and US Hwy 160 is the only highway that intersects and offers access to NM Hwy 597.  Although the intersection is in New Mexico, it can only be reached from the Arizona or Colorado portion of US Hwy 160 (in other words, visitors from New Mexico must leave New Mexico to enter Arizona or Colorado and then reenter New Mexico on US Hwy 160 to reach the NM Hwy 597 intersection and the Four Corners Monument).
