Richard B. Dunn Solar Telescope Sacramento Peak Solar Observatory Named in honor of one of solar astronomy's most creative instrument builders, this vacuum tower telescope is the masterpiece of his long scientific career at Sacramento Peak. The Vacuum Tower Telescope is the largest of the solar research instruments atop Sacramento Peak. However, like a large iceberg, only a part of its total bulk is actually visible. Approximately 67 meters (220') of this telescope lie out of sight, buried beneath the surface of the peak. The tower portion rises thirteen stories above ground level and the whole building from top to bottom is a single instrument. April 2000 |
