In 1879, with the coming of the railroad, the town of La Junta was renamed Watrous by Santa Fe Railroad officials.   The town retains much of its original architectural character as a railroad community.   If you take Exit 366 on Interstate 25 and travel north on the frontage road to Wagon Mound, you will see, paralleling the road, to the west, one of the longest stretches of the Santa Fe Trail ruts in existence.
