The yellow field and red symbol colors in the New Mexico flag come from the colors of Spain.   The circle with the rays come from the ancient sun symbol of a Native American people, called the Zia, who believed that the giver of all good gave them gifts in groups of four.  The rays are bound by a circle of life and love, without a beginning or end.

Many people consider New Mexico's climate one of the finest in the United States.  Since New Mexico lies hundreds of miles from sources of moisture, it has an arid climate.  This dryness, combined with the thin atmosphere, leads to large temperature differences from day to night.  Even the warmest days cool off at night and the coldest nights warm up to sunny days.  There are four distinct seasons, each with its own characteristics.
